The Mecosta Strip Mall Heist

Canadian Lakes - Around 8:00 am on March 5, 2008 Mecosta County dispatch received a call from an employee of the Firstbank in Canadian Lakes stating that their may have been a break in. From that point on the calls began to pour in from other strip mall employees with the same complaints. It appeared that all of the phone lines to the strip mall businesses had been cut. Police said that they believe that this was done to silence the alarms from alerting the authority's. A canine unit was also sent to the scene to help with the investigation that became hot news to the Mecosta County community. The local paper even showed up to interview business owners. All and all, eight businesses where broken into and the police say that the losses were substantial.
One of the businesses "K & K Movies" had a United States Postal Service Contract Station and it was also burglarized as well. Because U.S. Postal Service funds where also stolen, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering a $1000.00 cash reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspects.

It is a federal crime to forcibly break into or attempt to break into any post office, or any building used in whole or part as a post office, with intent to commit any larceny or other depredation. The crime is punishable by a fine and sentence of up to five years imprisonment.
