HOLIDAY
Be sure to participate in all the events of the holiday weekend. There is the festival, music, ball games, antique gatherings…and really good food!!
The Public Safety Department personnel will be doing demonstrations for family day Saturday at the park, (seatbelt use, Officer Jesse the horse, fire safety equipment, etc.)
BALDWIN STREET BRIDGE
Engineering work needs to continue to keep this important project in the MDOT queue. A grant will be sought from the Fremont Foundation to assist with the engineering analysis of the bridge project aimed at taking the Riverwalk under the new bridge. The TS&L (type, size and location report) is anticipated to be completed by February 2010 for $28,750. We are looking for $20,000 from Fremont. After acceptance by MDOT of the TS&L report the more significant and expensive engineering work can begin probably in 2011, 2012.
TUBA BACH
Reminder…Tuba Back concerts begin September 13, on Sundays at 4:00 in the High School auditorium. Another season of fun/serious music will occur! Banners for the series are being completed at this time and will be hung up beginning next week!!
AERIAL LADDER TRUCK
The Cab is done!!! That means that the City has made the first partial payment to Rosenbauer of $225,000. At this writing the assemble is about one week ahead of schedule.
ALCOHOL GRANT
Jim Taylor has once again submitted an alcohol interdiction grant for $30,000 to be shared among the City, Sheriff and Ferris for extra patrol and education activities on and off campus.
PEDESTRIAN SAFETY INITIATIVE
City, State Police, and Ferris patrol officers made courtesy contacts with students concerning pedestrian safety issues on State Street.
STUDENTS RETURN
On Thursday, Frank West, Mark Warba, Terry Harper, Tom Hogenson, and Steve Sobers were all on the Ice Cream dipping teams’ schedules. Many other activities are planned including Bulldog Bonanza, Census and recycling activities.
GRANT ACTIVITY
Cindy Plautz continues to work on the generator grant. She is in the environmental assessment review, which takes 60 days with required response periods and advertising from the public.
MAJOR PROJECTS
Lots of progress has transpired on several major projects:
- User Charge information has been written by the City and is in the hands of Jim White
- Avigation easement information has been completed including survey work and is in the hands of Jim White
- Discussion and preliminary approval of the details of the Mitchell Creek land purchase has been concluded with Judy Shroyer. Survey work is being authorized and a formal offer is being perfected
- Negotiations have continued on the parking agreement with the Salvation Army, Methodist Church, County, John Garlic and the City
- Discussions continue with the FAA over future use of the old Airport Hangar
- Communications continue with industries expanding jobs, but only a partial application for abatement has been received from Haworth
- Analysis of the ACO for the wastewater plant has been completed and direction from the Commission (following receipt of legal counsel) is needed before further discussions with DEQ
- Employment agreements for a new Assessor are in the hands of the municipal attorneys of Greenville and Big Rapids.
- Auditors continue to examine City books for the annual audit.
PUBLIC WORKS ACTIVITIES
Streets –
- Hauled brush from Hemlock Park removed by ARRA Michigan Works Project
- Graveled and graded alley in the Third Ward
- Repaired three manholes of Fourth Avenue
- Installed a water main valve for Parkview Village off of Fourth Avenue
- Prepped area for asphalt patching and overlays
- Path repairs at Northend Riverside Park
- Asphalt patches in alley near JC Penneys
- Hauled books for Friends of the Library
- Repainted yellow curb for schools
- Replaced 4 stolen American flags Downtown
- Set out barricades for River Days
- Swept Hemlock Park
- Cleaned drainage ditch and catch basins on Baldwin Street at Hanchetts
- Cleaned catch basins at Second and Washington
Parks –
- Maintaining City’s park system and the downtown
Sewer –
- Cleaning sewer lines and performing other daily scheduled duties
Motor fleet –
- Winter equipment repairs and maintenance is beginning
Water utilities –
- Miss Digs
- Rechecked meter reads from August read cycle
- Performed final reads on new and former tenants
- Located and vacuumed out valve boxes at Evergreen Village
- Shut off water to North Parkview and assisted in repairs to water main and removal of a fire hydrant.
- Raised and repaired water service shut-off stacks
- Repaired a number of water meter touch reads
