***On Tuesday, December 16, 2008, Big Rapids Department of Public Safety Officers responded to a complaint in the 400 block of South Michigan Ave.***According to a police log the father of one of the young men at the residence called the police to report that his son had been assaulted by his roommates.*** When Officers responded to the residence to take a report the young man refused to pursue the case.***Meanwhile, the roommates contacted the police department to give their sides of the story.***The young mans father then showed up from Lansing to move his son out of the residents.***While on scene the father allegedly confronted and threatened the roommates with a metal rod from a desk.***Now officers say everyone denies everything***The case was turned over to the city attorneys office for review.***Big Rapids .biz is your Big Rapids Michigan Online News Magazine.***Read more police logs in the Blotter section of the website.***

Senator Shepherd Pleads Guilty

 NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA - 39 year old State Senator Derrick Shepherd of Louisiana pled guilty on October 10, 2008 in U.S. District Court for one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.

 Shepherd admitted laundering illegal funds for his co-defendant Gwendolyn Moyo, who excepted premiums for fraudulant construction bonds and handed over the premiums to Senator Shepherd.

 Shepherd took the proceeds and deposited them into his law firm bank accounts. He then gave a portion of the money back to Moyo and to other criminal associates, while keeping a portion of premiums for himself.

 Shepherd also admitted that he created bogus bills and time records to hide his deeds in the laundering scheme.

 Senator Shepherd faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in in prison and a fine of $250,000, he may also have to pay restitution to any victims.
