Jefferson City Missouri News - An 18-year-old Missouri girl who repeatedly stabbed a 9-year-old girl in the chest, slicing her throat and strangling her was sentenced today to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
Alyssa Bustamante was just 15-years-old when she led police to the shallow grave in her neighborhood where she buried 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten of Jefferson Missouri after murdering her in October of 2009.
According to the Associated Press, Bustamante pleaded guilty to "Second-Degree Murder And Armed Criminal Action," and avoided a trial where she was charged with "First Degree Murder" where she would have faced life in prison without parole.
Along with her life sentence, Bustamante was also given a 30-year prison term for the "Armed Criminal Action" charge.
The AP reported that Elizabeth Olten's mother Patty Preiss sat silently, staring forward while Bustamante made an apology for the murder in court today. The AP said Preiss called Bustamante an evil monster and declared that she hated her before the sentencing.
According to the Huff Post, Bustamante's defense attorneys attempted to build their case by saying that Bustamante had a troubled childhood, and the increased dosage of her Prozac heightened her mood swings and made her more prone to violence in the weeks leading to the murder of her neighbor Elizabeth Olten.
