A father and son were rescued after an ice-fishing trip turns into a near death nightmare.
Van Buren County MI News - Today, around 8:00 AM, Richard Abbott, 52, and his father, 73-year-old Dean Abbott, both from Bangor MI, returned to Moon Lake for a second day of ice-fishing. The pair decided to return to the same spot they had fished the day before.
According to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office, while walking on the ice, Dean plunged through and into the icy cold water of the lake. His son Richard, while trying to save his father, fell in as well.
Richard, then found the strength to climb out of the water and made his way to the shore where he grabbed a nearby boat, and pushed it to his father's location. Deputies said Richard tried, but was unable to pull his father into the boat due to the heavy water-logged Carhartt suit his father was wearing.
Someone in a nearby home heard the father and son screaming for help and called 911, according to a report made by Wood TV News 8.
Deputies from the sheriff's office quickly arrived on scene along with additional emergency personnel, and utilized other boats from the area and were able to pull Dean from the water.
Deputies told Big Rapids .biz, they used emergency tow ropes that they keep in their patrol cars as standard equipment to pull the boats back into shore after the 73-year-old father was rescued.
Both father and son were taken by South Haven EMS to South Haven Hospital where they were treated for hypothermia.
Deputie said the pair's injuries were non-life-threatening.
Sheriff Gribler from the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office said people venturing out on the ice should do so with extreme caution. "As its, somewhat safe, to walk on ice that is 4 to 6 inches thick, atv's or snowmobiles should never be taken out on frozen lakes with anything less than 12-16 inches of ice," said Gribler.
