Ypsilanti MI News - The Washtenaw County Sheriff's office has reported the death of Eastern Michigan University Police Chief Greg O'Dell.
"Today we lost a dear friend, great leader and loving family man. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family, friends and all those that have been touched by his presence throughout the years. Chief O'Dell we miss you dearly." The Sheriff's Office said.
According to Ann Arbor police, 54-year-old Greg O'Dell died from what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Derrick Jackson from the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office told the Ypsilanti Courier that Ann Arbor Police responded to a 911 call from a concerned family member of O'Dell's, after finding what was thought to be a suicide note.
Around 12:30 PM, on Friday, Greg O'Dell was found dead near his missing vehicle on Heron River Drive. According to Ann Arbor .Com, police had the area closed off while the suicide scene was being investigated.
According to information on the Eastern Michigan University Website Greg O'Dell had an almost 20-year career with the Ann Arbor Police Department.
Eastern Michigan University President Susan Martin said "O'Dell's death is a tragic loss to Eastern Michigan University and the Washtenaw County area. Chief O'Dell was a wonderful man who was deeply admired for his tremendous contributions to the Ann Arbor and Eastern Michigan communities. He was respected both as a caring person and as a highly accomplished police officer. He was a beloved and key member of the leadership team of Eastern and I will personally deeply miss him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this very difficult time."
A public visitation will be held for Greg O'Dell on Wednesday December 28th, from 5-8 PM, at Nie Funeral Home on Liberty Road in Ann Arbor. A memorial service will follow on Thursday at 11:00 AM, at Pease Auditorium on the EMU campus.
